Surat: In a shocking incident, a BJP worker, Umesh Tiwari, fired multiple rounds from his licensed revolver during a wedding ceremony in the Dindoli area of Surat on the night of December 8. The indiscriminate firing injured two youths, who were dancing at the event. The entire episode was caught on CCTV, leading to the swift identification of the accused. The incident has created an uproar in the city.

Details of the Incident

Around 11 PM on December 8, Umesh Tiwari was attending a friend’s wedding at Shakti Society in Dindoli. While dancing to the tunes of the DJ, he pulled out his licensed revolver and fired three rounds in the air and two on the ground, reportedly to showcase his influence. Two young men, Santosh Dubey and Virendra Vishwakarma, sustained bullet injuries to their legs and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Accused Caught on CCTV

The entire incident was recorded on CCTV cameras installed at the venue. The footage clearly shows Umesh Tiwari firing his revolver and later holding it while one of the injured men collapses onto a chair. One of the victims is reportedly involved in the water supply business. Following the incident, the police arrested Umesh Tiwari and confiscated his revolver.

Police Action

The Dindoli police have registered a case against Umesh Tiwari and initiated action under charges of reckless firing. DCP Bhagirath Gadhvi confirmed that Tiwari fired five rounds in total, injuring two people. The police have also begun the process to revoke his gun license.

License Under Scrutiny

Questions are being raised about how Umesh Tiwari was granted a gun license despite no apparent threats to his life. Tiwari has held a licensed revolver for the past four years and is known for flaunting it to project a dominant image. He frequently shares pictures with prominent leaders on social media.

Originally from Uttar Pradesh, Umesh Tiwari has been residing in Surat for several years and is an active member of the BJP. He has previously sought a ticket for the Surat Municipal Corporation elections and recently contested for the position of ward president from Ward 27, Dindoli.
