New Delhi/Ahmedabad: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially approved India’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games 2030, with Ahmedabad proposed as the host city. The approval was granted during a Special General Meeting (SGM) held on Wednesday.
India had earlier organized an “Expression of Interest” summit in March to present its intent to host the event. Following this approval, India is now required to submit its final bidding proposal by August 31, 2025.
With Canada withdrawing from the race, India’s chances of securing the event have significantly increased. Recently, a delegation from the Commonwealth Games Federation, including Games Director Darren Hall, visited Ahmedabad to assess its readiness. Another delegation is expected to visit later this month.
The final decision on the host nation will be announced at the Commonwealth Games General Assembly scheduled for late November. India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi.
Apart from the Commonwealth Games, India is also preparing to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. Last November, the country formally presented its proposal to host the Olympics. The 2028 Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, while Brisbane, Australia, has been chosen for the 2032 edition.
Historically, India has hosted three multi-sport events — the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and the Asian Games in 1982 and 1951.
On Tuesday, the National Sports Governance Bill and the National Anti-Doping Amendment Bill, 2025, were passed in the Rajya Sabha after clearing the Lok Sabha. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that these reforms aim to strengthen sports administration in the country.
