Hazra Park Durgotsab Marks 82nd Year with the Theme “SUDDHI”

Kolkata, (West Bengal) [India], 19th September, 2024: The Hazra Park Durga Puja, a beacon of social justice and community empowerment, celebrates its 82nd year with the theme “SUDDHI,” symbolizing purification. Established in 1942 by Dalit employees of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), this iconic festival has evolved from its humble beginnings into a major citywide event, drawing countless devotees. Despite its growth, it remains deeply connected to its roots in the struggles for equality and social justice, particularly for marginalized communities.

The theme “SUDDHI” serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight against discrimination, emphasizing the puja’s historic role in challenging caste-based oppression. In the 1940s, the Dalit community, long excluded from religious ceremonies, used this festival as a platform to assert their right to worship and celebrate. Over the decades, Hazra Park Durga Puja has grown into more than a religious festival; it stands as a movement promoting human rights, equality, and the collective strength of communities.

Sri. Sayan Deb Chatterjee, Joint Secretary of the Hazra Park Durgotsab Committee, highlighted the significance of the theme, stating, “Our puja is not just a celebration of faith but a celebration of our resilience and unity. It stands as a strong message against discrimination, reminding us of the progress we’ve made and the work still ahead to create a more just society.”

The legacy of the Hazra Park Durga Puja extends far beyond its cultural impact. It continues to inspire other communities to challenge discriminatory practices and promote inclusivity. As Kolkata gears up for the Durga Puja festivities, Hazra Park remains a symbol of hope, a celebration of progress, and a reminder of the importance of social justice.
