Shravan 2025: Devotees Throng Shiva Temples Across Gujarat on the Last Monday of the Holy Month

Gujarat witnesses grand celebrations as thousands of devotees gather in Shiva temples on the concluding Monday of Shravan month, performing special rituals, chanting hymns, and offering prayers to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.

Ahmedabad, August 18, 2025: The holy month of Shravan, considered the most auspicious period dedicated to Lord Shiva in the Hindu calendar, is reaching its conclusion today with the observance of the last Monday, known as “Shravan Somvar.” On this sacred day, Gujarat is witnessing an overwhelming wave of devotion as Shiva temples across cities, towns, and villages are overflowing with devotees. From early morning hours, devotees dressed in traditional attire have been lining up in long queues outside temples to offer prayers and perform rituals to please Lord Shambhu, popularly worshipped as Bholenath.

Throughout the Shravan month, devotees across the state have been observing fasts, chanting mantras, and offering prayers every Monday, which is considered highly significant for Lord Shiva’s worship. Today, being the final Monday of the month, has attracted a massive turnout of devotees, with temple bells, chants of “Har Har Mahadev,” and devotional songs creating a spiritual atmosphere in every corner.

Special Rituals and Offerings on the Final Monday

On this concluding day, temples are decorated with flowers, lights, and traditional adornments. Special abhishek rituals are being performed on Shivlings across temples with offerings of milk, water, honey, curd, sugar, and sacred bilva (bel) leaves. Devotees are also offering flowers, fruits, and dhatura, which hold symbolic significance in Lord Shiva’s worship. Many temples have arranged for continuous recitation of Shiva mantras such as “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Mahamrityunjaya Jaap” to enhance the spiritual ambiance.

Priests at major temples explained that performing abhishek and prayers on this last Monday holds a unique significance. According to Hindu beliefs, those who sincerely worship Lord Shiva during Shravan Somvar are blessed with prosperity, peace, and spiritual growth. Married women especially observe fasts and offer prayers for the well-being and longevity of their husbands, while unmarried girls seek the blessings of Shiva to find an ideal life partner.

Abhijit Muhurat Adds to the Auspiciousness

Adding to the day’s spiritual energy, today’s Abhijit Muhurat is marked between 12:17 PM and 1:08 PM, which is considered one of the most auspicious time periods for performing puja and abhishek. Many devotees are planning their temple visits specifically during this time to ensure maximum spiritual benefits from their offerings and prayers.

Devotee Rush in Famous Temples Across Gujarat

Temples in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar witnessed heavy crowds since dawn. However, the largest gatherings were seen at iconic Shiva shrines such as Somnath Temple in Gir Somnath district, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga near Dwarka, Bhavnath Temple in Junagadh, and Koteshwar Mahadev near Kutch. These temples have become centers of attraction for both local devotees and pilgrims from across India who traveled to Gujarat specifically to witness and participate in the last Somvar of Shravan.

At Somnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, thousands of devotees were seen taking holy dips in the waters near Triveni Sangam before entering the temple. The air reverberated with chants of “Bum Bum Bhole” and “Har Har Mahadev” as priests conducted grand aartis and rituals. The temple trust had made special arrangements to manage the crowd, including separate queues for women and senior citizens.

In urban centers like Ahmedabad, famous temples such as Bhadrakali Temple, Isanpur Mahadev, and Motera Shiv Mandir were beautifully decorated, drawing in massive crowds. Similarly, in Surat and Vadodara, temples witnessed midnight bhajans, kirtans, and special community feasts organized by local devotees and trusts.

Faith and Festivity Go Hand in Hand

The last Monday of Shravan not only highlights religious devotion but also brings communities together in celebration. Local markets around temple areas are bustling with vendors selling flowers, garlands, coconuts, sweets, and devotional items. Street-side stalls offering traditional foods, prasad, and beverages like sugarcane juice are doing brisk business. The spiritual fervor, combined with festive energy, has turned today into both a religious and cultural celebration.

Beliefs Associated with Shravan Somvar

According to Hindu scriptures, worshipping Lord Shiva in the month of Shravan holds special importance because it is believed that during this period, Lord Shiva consumed the poison (Halahal) that emerged from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) to save the universe. This act of supreme sacrifice made Shravan the most sacred month for Shiva worship. Devotees believe that fasting, praying, and performing rituals during this month absolves them of past sins and brings divine blessings for the future.

Conclusion

As Gujarat observes the last Monday of Shravan today, Shiva temples are witnessing a confluence of faith, devotion, and festivity. The chants of “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Har Har Mahadev” continue to echo, as devotees of all ages, from children to the elderly, seek blessings from Mahadev. With beautifully adorned temples, auspicious muhurats, and special rituals, today marks the grand conclusion of Shravan 2025, leaving behind an unforgettable experience of spirituality for the people of Gujarat.
